Rio De Janeiro, May 29, 2012 - Headlines boasting those ‘bountiful bikinis’ littered the web this past week as Brazil held Rio Fashion Week Summer 2013 (May 22-26). There’s no doubt that when it comes to bikinis, the Brazilians and Cariocas in particular, do it best. Several trips to the region have convinced me that if this isn’t were sex was invented, then it’s definitely where it has been perfected. As a result, Brazilian beachwear is the perfect dressing for those incredible Brazilian bodies.
As beautiful as the Brazilian summer fashion is (their summer by the way, starts in December), the fashion consists mainly of pared down knock offs of current European ready-to-wear. Take Poko Panos for example and their Christian Dior doves and Missoni and Matthew Williamson inspired prints. Lenny’s collection clearly builds on Phillip Lim’s dip dye SS12 looks and even steal one look from Dolce & Gabbana’s SS12 net-themed collection. Bastardized renditions of Cavalli, Givenchy and Mary Katrantzou as far as the eye can see. Coven clearly channels Prada and Reserva even had their very own fake Tommy Hilfiger style family!
Just to be clear, we’re not saying the collections are bad, but some originality would have been nice. Enter Cia. Marítima and their unique take on bold colours and prints as well as Blue Man and Triya’s 1980s influenced glamourous beachwear. Check out our gallery of some of Rio’s top summer 2013 looks. Knock-off and original.
